Data Challenges

Our data challenges are designed to generate insights in the immediate term and to attract researchers to Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias in the medium and long term.

Data Challenges provide a mechanism to engage with a global community of researchers and data scientists and offer an opportunity to harness their expertise, insights, and potentially some “outside of the box” thinking and approaches.  We always strive to draw in expertise from across the scientific community – including outside of the Alzheimer’s and related dementias field, where our aim is to keep them involved in our mission and goals.

Since the AD Workbench provides collaborative workspaces, we promote collaboration and open science with the challenges that we host – with the goal of addressing important questions, sharing the results and making the code, that was developed to glean the newly uncovered insights, available to the community.

AD Data Initiaive coalition partners have been participating in Data Challenges and Hackatons since the program's inception. See some examples below:

Bio-Hermes

Participants of the Bio-Hermes Biomarker Data Challenge, open to academic researchers based in the UK, are now engaging with the Bio-Hermes dataset – which consists of an array of multi-modal markers of dementia including 15 digital cognitive tests, 25 blood-based biomarkers, imaging and demographic data collected from 1,001 US-based participants, 24% of whom are from traditionally underrepresented communities.

Later this year there will be a closed challenge where groups will be investigating early detection of Alzheimer’s disease through retinal scans, but there are other open challenges on the horizon, so stay tuned as we plan additional opportunities for the community to engage with data to answer pressing research questions.
